While we were exploring the scrub around Karumba we came accross this. At first we thought somebody had been dumping rubbish here but in a few moments it dawned on us that this was art! It was created by a male Great bower bird who does this to attract a mate. Females visit the bower and if they are impressed with his art they will mate with him. There are a number of different species of bower birds in Australia and each of them like to collect different coloured objects for decoration. The Great Bower bird likes to collect green, red and white objects.
Ever since digital cameras became available I have been using them to take natural history pictures. I set out to see how many differnt species I could photograph and identify, and to try and understand how each creature fits into its given habitat. I made this website to display some of the things I've seen. The images were taken in various parts of Australia and noted in the labels. My identifications may not all be right, please dont hesitate to comment if you think i have it wrong
